University application in Kenya is done through Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) for government-sponsored students (GSSP) looking forward to joining public universities in Kenya.

Otherwise, students wishing to be self-sponsored (PSSP) can apply for degree courses in their university of choice by filling out application forms provided by the university. Some universities have dedicated application portals.

In this article, We will take you through the process of courses application in Kenyan universities through KUCCPS and directly to the universities for self-sponsored students. Let’s get to it.

Requirements for Joining University in Kenya

To join a university in Kenya, you need to meet the following requirements.

  1. Have a KCSE mean grade of C plus and above. One is also required to meet the subject requirements for the course.
  2. Diploma holders in respective courses can also submit their applications directly to their preferred institutions.

University application in Kenya 2024 through KUCCPS

Follow this procedure to apply for courses in any public or private university in Kenya. Note that students placed in private universities will not be considered for government sponsorship.

  1. Visit KUCCPS students’ portals.
  2. To log in, input your KCSE index number, and KCSE year followed by a Password which is your KCPE index number or your birth certificate.
  3. go to application/revision.
  4. Select Apply Now.
  5.  You will be provided with three application choices (1a, 1b, 1c, 2, 3 and 4).
  6. The first choice should be one course at three different universities.
  7. Click submission.
  8. Pay the application fee to complete the application.

The following tips will help you apply to a university in Kenya.

  1. Start your application as soon as the KUCCPS portal opens.
  2. Consult with your teachers or students who are currently at university.
  3. Choose programs that you are passionate about and which you meet the requirements for.

More so, it’s advisable to note down the course code, course name, and institution offering the course. This will save you a lot of headaches while submitting your application.  

Select courses that you have higher or slightly lower cluster points as compared to the previous year.

International students application

International students can apply to a university of their choice in Kenya directly through the university application portal. Self-sponsored Kenya students can also apply directly to the university.

Note that to be admitted, you need to meet the minimum entry requirements for your selected course.

Notes

Note that KUCCPS has automated cluster points calculation. Your weighted cluster will be provided to you on the portal. Cluster points differ from one course to another so do your weighted cluster points.  

KUCCPS charges every student KES 1, 500 application fees.

Well-established universities tend to have higher cluster points than recently chattered universities. Moreover, competitive courses have higher cluster points.

KUCCPS usually places students in their first-choice course (1a). Expect KUCCPS to place you for your first choice program.
