Mount Kenya University offers a diverse range of diploma courses across all of its departments. These courses are available in a myriad of fields including medicine, law, engineering, education, and business.
This article will look at MKU diploma courses, admission requirements, and fee structure per semester.
Applications are done in January, May, or September. We shall look at the application process later on in this article.
Diploma in community oral health (dental therapy)
KCSE mean grade of C or its equivalent, and C in English, Biology or Biological Sciences and C- in any two of the following subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Sciences, Agriculture, and General Science.
Fee structure: KSH 59, 550 per trimester. The course takes nine trimesters.
Diploma in Dental Technology
KCSE mean grade of C and C in English or Kiswahili, Chemistry or Biology, and C- in either Mathematics, Physics, or Physical Sciences.
Fee structure: KSH 59, 550 per trimester. The course takes nine trimesters.
Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery
KCSE mean grade of C (Plain) or its equivalent and C (plain) in English/ Kiswahili, C (plain) in Biology, C- (minus) in Chemistry, Mathematics/ physics.
Intake for this program is only in September.
Fee structure: KSh. 66,000 per trimester
Diploma in Health Records and Information Technology
KCSE mean grade of C (plain) or its equivalent, and C- (minus) in English/ Kiswahili and D (plain) in Biology, Mathematics/ Physics.
The fee for this course is KSH 34, 550 per trimester. Certificate holders can study online at a cost of KSH 29, 000 per semester.
Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics
KCSE mean grade of C- or its equivalent, and D+ in English, Biology or Biological Sciences, Chemistry or Physical sciences and D (plain) in either one of the following subject; Physics, Mathematics, Home Science, Agriculture
The course takes three years to complete at a fee of KSH 39, 550 per trimester.
Diploma in Food Science and Processing Technology
KCSE mean grade of C with C- in Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics or Physics, Biological Sciences or Physical Sciences.
This course will cost you KSH 34, 550 per trimester.
Diploma in Community Health and Development
KCSE mean grade C or its equivalent and C- in English or Kiswahili and one of the following: Mathematics or Physics or Biology or Chemistry or Physical Science or Biological Science.
The course costs KSH 34, 550 per trimester.
Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology
KCSE mean grade of C or its equivalent, and C in Biology or Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, and English or Kiswahili.
Need an alternative? You can enrol for a diploma in pharmacy in other institutions in Kenya.
The fee for the course is KSH 49, 550 per trimester.
- Diploma in Law.
- Diploma in special needs education.
KCSE mean grade of C or its equivalent, and C in two teaching subjects
The fee is KSH 29, 550 for full-time learners and KSH 27, 000 for online learning.
Diploma in Early Childhood Studies
KCSE mean grade of C or its equivalent, or a certificate in ECD from a recognized institution.
The course is offered full-time at KSH 29, 550 per trimester for 7 trimesters or distance learning at KSH 24, 000 per trimester.
Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology.
KCSE mean grade of C or its equivalent, and C- in Chemistry and Biology or relevant certificate.
The course takes five trimesters to complete both full-time and distance learning. The fee per trimester is KSH 34, 550.
Diploma in animal health and production
KCSE Mean grade of C (Plain)or its equivalent; and at least C (Plain) in Biology or Biological Sciences, C-(Minus) in Chemistry or Physical Science, C-(Minus) in Mathematics or Agriculture.
Holders of certificate in the same course are also admitted into the program.
The study mode for this course is full time and it takes nine trimesters to complete each costing KSH 39, 550.
Diploma in Information Technology
MKU is dedicated to offering cutting-edge diploma courses in IT. The requirements for this course are KCSE Mean grade of C- (minus) with D+(plus) in Math/Physics/Computer Studies and English/Kiswahili Or a Relevant Certificate recognized by the Mount Kenya University Senate.
The course takes five trimesters each costing KSH 34, 550. Public institutions also offer diploma in IT.
A diploma in computer science and, diploma in information systems also have the same requirements as diploma in information technology.
Diploma in Information Science
KCSE mean Grade C (plain) with a minimum of C (plain) in Mathematics/ Physics/Computer Studies and English /Kiswahili Or A certificate in a relevant discipline
The course takes five trimesters to complete at a cost of KSH 29, 550 per trimester.
- Diploma in Archives and Records Management and Diploma in Library Management
These two MKU diploma courses have the same requirements. To be admitted into either of the programs, you need to meet the following minimum requirements.
- A KCSE mean grade of C minus.
- Alternatively you can be admitted with a certificate in a relevant discipline.
The courses takes five trimesters at the cost of KSH 29, 500 full time an KSH 29, 000 for distance learning study mode.
Diploma in business in information technology.
KCSE mean grade of C- or its equivalent, and D+ in Mathematics /Physics/ Computer Studies and English or Kiswahili.
This course will take five trimesters to complete at a cost of KSH 29, 550 per trimester.
Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
To study diploma in electrical and electronic engineering at Mt Kenya, you need a KCSE mean grade of C minus with the same grade in maths/physics.
The course will take 9 trimesters to complete at the cost of KSH 34, 550 per trimester.

Diploma in Counselling Psychology
KCSE mean grade C- (minus) Or Certificate in relevant field. The program takes 5 trimesters to complete each costing KSH 29, 550.
Diploma in Community Development and Social Work
KCSE mean grade of C- or a certificate in a relevant field. The course will take 5 trimesters at KSH 29,550 per trimester full time and KSh. 29,000 per semester for digital learning.
Diploma in County Administration and Governance
The course has the same requirements as the Diploma in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution and Diploma in Security Studies and Criminology.
The requirements for the above courses are at least a mean grade of C minus in KCSE or a certificate in a relevant field.

Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication
KCSE mean grade C-(minus) and C (Plain) in either English or Kiswahili. Or A certificate in a related field.

Diploma in Film Studies.
KCSE mean grade C-(minus) and C(plain) in either English or Kiswahili / Art & Design / Drawing & Design Or A certificate in a related field.
Duration and fee: 6 Trimesters KSh. 39,550 per trimester.

KCSE mean grade of C- or its equivalent. It takes 6 Trimesters to complete at the cost of KSh. 37,550 per trimester.
