KMTC requirements for diploma in Nursing (Direct Entry).
The following are the requirements for a diploma in nursing offered at the Kenya Medical Training College and other accredited nursing schools in Kenya.
Note that these entry requirements have been set by the Nursing Council of Kenya, a body that regulates nursing practice and training in Kenya.
- KSCE mean grade of C plain and above.
- C plain in either English or Kiswahili.
- C plain in either biology or biological sciences.
- C minus in chemistry, mathematics, or physics/physical sciences.
KMTC diploma in nursing programs
The following are diploma-level nursing specialties offered at the Kenya Medical Training College.
- Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (Pre-service).
- Diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing Mental Health and Psychiatry Nursing.
- Diploma in Kenya Registered Nurse.
- Diploma in Kenya Registered Nurse/Midwifery (KRN/M).
- Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (Upgrading from Enrolled Community Health Nurse).
- Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (Upgrading from Enrolled Community Health Nursing).
- Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (Upgrading from Enrolled Nurse /Midwife).
Diploma nursing courses take three years to complete.
Upgrading to diploma
If you already hold a certificate in Nursing you can upgrade to a diploma in nursing.
Upgrading programs take 1.5 years on a full-time basis or 2 years if a student opts for distance learning.
KMTC certificate in Nursing requirements.
- KCSE mean grade of C minus.
- C minus in languages (English or Kiswahili).
- C minus in biology or biological sciences.
- D plus in either chemistry, mathematics, or physics/physical sciences.
The KMTC certificate in nursing course takes 2 years to complete. Once you’ve completed the course, you will be awarded a certificate in enrolled community health nursing. From here certificate holders can upgrade to a diploma after registering with The Nursing Council of Kenya.

Nursing students are required to pay KSh. 1, 500 for skills lab manuals and materials.
KMTC students are encouraged to pay applicable year fees in full at the beginning of the academic year BUT they can pay in installments i.e. first semester and second semester.
All students are also required to have an NHIF cover or present a copy of parent’s NHIF card during admission.
