First Up, congratulations on excelling in your KCSE. Your next academic journey will be enrolling for a course at a university/college. It’s going to be fun. Trust me.

Besides meeting overall KCSE grade and subject requirements for a course, you have to meet the cluster points for your preferred course at your preferred university for KUCCPS to place you there. Note that cluster points only apply to degree courses. Diploma courses don’t have any cluster points requirements.

In 2025, you don’t have to calculate cluster points. It’s even not possible because students don’t have access to their performance induces. Cluster points calculation is done for you automatically by the KUCCPS system. But keep it to understand how they work and what determines the cluster points for a course.

How are cluster points calculated?

As noted earlier, Cluster points are calculated automatically by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services portal and only apply to degree programs.

The placement body advises against manual calculation because doing so will ultimately lead to incorrect points. All cluster points calculation formulas provided online no longer work because they don’t equate performance induces (P1) which are not provided to students together with KCSE results. However, KUCCPS is provided with Performance indices for each student.

Your weighted cluster points will vary from one course to another due to subject combinations. this means that your cluster points for medicine-related courses will differ from your cluster points for science-related courses.

More so, cluster points for the same course differ from one university to another. For example, cluster points for Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry for the year 2022 were 33.576 and 27.542 in JKUAT and Moi University respectively.

How KUCCPS determines your cluster points

KUCCPS uses cluster subjects and your performance induce to determine your cluster points. Better performance in cluster subjects means higher cluster points.

“KUCCPS is able to calculate your cluster points through the automated placement system after obtaining KCSE examination performance data, including performance indices (PI) for each student, from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC). Individual secondary school graduates are not provided with the PI, hence cannot calculate their weighted cluster points.”

How KUCCPS places students based on their cluster points

To demonstrate this, I will use the following example. Let’s say Moi University has 40 spaces for a bachelor of nursing. 45 students submitted their application but remember the university can only admit 40 students.

The cluster points for the students will be ranked from the highest to the lowest. Applicants with higher cluster points will be placed first.

This will go consecutively until the 40th applicant. If the 40th applicant had a cluster of 38, that would be the cut-off point. That basically how the cluster system works

Important notes about KUCCPS cut-off points

While submitting your application, you should keep the following at the back of your head.

  1. The higher the demand for a course, the higher the cut-off points. This is because only the students with higher grades will be placed for the course.
  2. Cut-off points for a specific year are known at the end of the placement cycle.
  3. The cut-off system ensures fairness and competitiveness in the placement process.
  4. The cluster points system is automated. KUCCPS management doesn’t determine cluster points.
  5. Cut-off points for a given course differ from one university to another depending on the competitiveness/demand of that course in the university.
