The National Youth Services (NYS) is dedicated to recruiting and training youths in paramilitary skills and professional courses free of charge

After paramilitary training, NYS graduates can enrol in diploma and artisan courses in engineering, agriculture, fashion design, plant operation, and many more as long as they meet the minimum entry requirements. In this article, we will look at All NYS courses and their requirements.

NYS courses offered at Nairobi Engineering Institute

The following are artisan and diploma courses at the National Youths Service Engineering Institute. After completing your paramilitary studies, you can enrol in any course if you meet the entry requirements.

1. Diploma in Automotive Engineering – C minus
2. Diploma in Electrical Engineering – C minus
3. Diploma in Mechanical Engineering – C minus
4. Diploma in civil engineering –
5. Diploma in Computer Studies
6. Diploma in ICT
7. Diploma in Construction plant management
8. Diploma in Building Technology
9. Diploma in Avionics
10. Diploma in Air Frame

Requirements

The entry requirement for the diploma courses above is a KCSE mean grade of C minus. The institute might have additional subject requirements.

Kerio Valley campus on-job training courses

• Artisan in Motor vehicle Mechanics – KCPE certificate
• Artisan in Plant Mechanics – KCSE certificate
• Arstisan in plant operator – KCPE certificate

NYS Technical College Mombasa courses

• Craft in Mechanical production – D plain in KCSE
• Craft in Electrical & Electronics – D plain in KCSE
• Craft in Motor Vehicle Mechanics – D plain in KCSE
• Craft in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning – D plain in KCSE
• Craft in ICT – D plus in KCSE
• Craft in Plumbing – D plain in KCSE
• Craft in Masonry – D plain in KCSE

Education courses

NYS offers educational courses to paramilitary graduates. These courses are offered at the Center for Early Childhood Development in Naivasha.

1. Diploma in Early Childhood & Development Education – C plain in KCSE
2. Artisan in Early Childhood & Development Education – D+ in KCSE.

NYS catering courses

The following catering courses are offered at the Gilgil training camp.

1. Food and beverage
2. Food and beverage
3. Diploma in Catering & Accommodation management
4. Artisan catering and accommodation management

The center also offers a craft certificate in ICT

Agriculture courses

The National Youth Service has a school of agriculture located in Yatta constituency, Machakos.

The following courses are offered at the school.

1. Diploma in Agriculture – KCSE C minus or above.
2. Craft in Agriculture – KCSE D plain or above.

The school also offers a craft certificate in ICT.

Building courses

The following building courses are offered by the NYS School of Advanced Building in Nairobi.

1. Craft in Masonry = KCSE D plain
2. Craft in Plumbing = KCSE D plain
3. Craft in Electrical Installation = KCSE D plain
4. Craft in Carpentry = KCSE D plain
5. Craft in Upholstery – KCPE and above.

Beauty and Textile courses

The following programs are offered at the Textile and Garment Training Institute in Nairobi and Naivasha Technical Training Institute.

1. Craft in Beauty Therapy = KCSE mean grade D
2. Diploma in Fashion and Design = KCSE mean grade C minus
3. Craft in Fashion and Design – KCSE mean grade D
4. Artisan in Clothing and textile/Fashion and Design – KCPE

The institutes also offer Craft in Infomation technology.

Plant operator and mechanic courses

NYS trains plant operators and mechanics at Artisan level for free as long one has undergone paramilitary training.

1. Artisan in Plant operation (Machakos, Tana, Kerio Valley) – KCPE
2. Artisan in Plant Mechanics (Machakos, Tana, Kerio Valley ) – KCSE

4. Artisan in motor vehicle mechanics (Tana, Kerio Valley) – KCPE
