In Kenya, there are approximately 30 teacher-training colleges where you can enrol for a diploma in primary teacher education (PTE) otherwise known as P1.

Note that TSC is strict on these requirements. If you enrol for the course without meeting registration requirements, you will not be registered as a primary school teacher.

Qualifications for P1 teacher in Kenya

To enrol in a primary teacher education course in Kenya, one has to meet either of the three requirements provided by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

  1. A KCSE mean grade of C plain or above.
  2. At least a KCSE mean grade of C minus for the visually and hearing impaired.
  3. Primary Teacher Education (PTE) certificate holders can also apply.

Diploma in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) requirements in Kenya

To enrol for a diploma in early childhood development education, You have to meet the following requirements to be eligible for enrolment and registration.

  1. KCSE mean grade of C plain.
  2. KNEC ECDE Certificate holders can also apply for a diploma.

How to apply for courses

An application can be made through Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) when the portal is open for applications for those who scored at least C plain in KCSE.

Applications made through KUCCPS guarantee government sponsorship through Higher Education Funding when one is placed.

Alternatively, applications can be made directly to the school.

The requirements for a primary school teacher are at least C plain and above in KCSE. The entry requirement for hearing and visually impaired is a mean grade of C minus.
