Post graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) TSC requirements & universities
In this article, we will explore the registration/entry requirements for post graduate diploma in education (PGDE) in Kenya and institutions.
A post-graduate diploma in education is a one-year post-graduate course aimed at bachelor of science/arts degree holders who would like to pursue a career in education.
The Teachers Service Commission requires non-education degree holders to undergo further training covering key education modules such as philosophy education, education administration, education media, and teaching practice before registration.
To be registered as a teacher with PGDE, you are required to have an acceptable undergraduate degree. Unfortunately, Not all courses are acceptable. For example, a holder of a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering cannot be registered as a teacher even after PGDE. There are more unacceptable undergraduate courses that we will look at later in the article.
TSC Requirements for post graduate diploma in Education
To be registered by the Teachers Services Commission as a post-graduate diploma in education holder, you need to meet the following requirements.
- Have a bachelor’s degree in arts or science.
- Should have scored a mean grade of C plus and above in KCSE.
- Have a mean grade of C+ and above in two teaching subjects.
- Have PGDE from a recognized institution.

- Educational Measurement and Evaluation
- Subject Methods (Each subject 2 units)
- Project (To be completed)

- Teaching Practice (after course work)
Undergraduate courses where a postgraduate diploma in education is not applicable
In 2021, the Teachers Services Commission released a circular on a list of some undergraduate courses not eligible for registration as teachers despite pursuing PGDE.
“Applicants for registration whose training is in subjects that are currently NOT in the curriculum do not qualify irrespective of having undertaken a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and/ or Enhancement.” TSC said in the statement.
However, all is not lost, if you cannot pursue PGDE, you can enrol in Kenya School of TVET for a technical training course and acquire the pedagogical skills required to teach in TVET colleges.

According to TSC, holders of the above courses are not eligible for registration as teachers since the courses do not provide enough subject content therefore mastery of two teaching subjects is not adequate as per TSC standards.
Universities offering postgraduate diploma in education
You can enrol for PGDE in any of the following universities. Before enrolling, Kindly ensure that you have a TSC-acceptable undergraduate degree.

- The Catholic University of Eastern Africa
- The University of Eastern Africa Baraton
- Mount Kenya University (they also offer an online postgraduate diploma in education)
- The Presbyterian University of East Africa
- KCA University
- Masinde Muliro University
- Machakos University College
- Kenyatta University
- Moi University
- Kisii University
Fee structure
The course costs between Ksh 100, 000 and 150, 000 depending on the institution. For example, the full course costs Ksh 107, 000 at KCA University.

i’m not sure about BBIT, please confirm with tsc. Alternatively, you can apply at the Kenya school of TVET and pivot towards teaching tvet institutions.

Hi Ken, for college you can enroll at the Kenya school of TVET. I dont think BA + PGDE is currently accepted by TSC. It’s still best to consult with them directly to confirm the latest requirements. All the best

Yes, you will be considered beacuse of BA + PGDE. enhancement certificate wont move the needle during TSC registration but might help during your job hunt.

Hello Patrick. If BSC mathematics + pgde guarantees you registration by TSC, go for it. Number of units takes in undergrad doesnt matter.

Yes you can, but please do further consultation with TSC before enrolling. Alternatively, you can join the Kenya school of TVET (Formerly KTTC) for Diploma in technical education. With that you will be eligible to teach in TVET colleges.

Hi Ruth, with a BA degree and a post graduate diploma in Education, you will be eligible for regsitration with TSC. You can also opt to enroll for a mesters degree in a field like public relations. It all depends with your passion and interest.
