National polytechnics in Kenya are dedicated to providing high-quality education to young Kenyans in almost all fields of study. They offer artisan, certificate, diploma, and higher diploma courses in fields like engineering, business, building and construction, applied sciences, and more.
They are supplemented by Technical and Vocational Education Training Institutes (TVET) established under TVET Act No. 29 of 2013.
Currently, there are 30 national polytechnics in Kenya and the government plans to have one in each county. In this article, we will look at all polytechnics that have been elevated to the national polytechnic status, locations, and requirements for courses.

The government is dedicated to ensuring there is at least one national polytechnic in every county and a TVET institution in every constituency.
Technical Institutes set to be upgraded to National Polytechnic status in 2025
On 11th March 2025, a cabinet meeting chaired by President William Ruto approved the upgrading of the following technical training institutes to National Polytechnic status to enhance education across the country.
- Siaya Institute of Technology
- Bumbe Technical Training Institute
- Kipsoen Technical & Vocational College
- Kisiwa Technical Training Institute
Courses offered
As mentioned earlier, National Polytechnics offers artisan, certificate, diploma and higher diploma courses. The requirements for courses are as follows.
- Artisan courses – At least E in KCSE
- Certificate courses – At least D plain in KCSE
- Diploma courses – At least C minus in KCSE.
- Higher diploma courses – A diploma course in the same or related field.
