Education courses Kenya recognized by TSC

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is a body mandated to regulate, maintain, and manage the teaching profession in Kenya.

The following are the teaching courses in Kenya recognized by the Teacher’s Service Commission.

  1. Certificate, Diploma, and Degree in Early Childhood Development Education.
  2. Diploma in primary teacher education.
  3. Diploma in Education (Secondary option)
  4. Bachelor of Education (Arts)
  5. Bachelor of Education (Science)
  6. Bachelor of Science with Education
  7. Bachelor of arts with education.
  8. Post-graduate diploma in education

Requirements for education courses

To be registered as a teacher, you are required to meet the following academic and professional requirements by the Teachers Service Commission failure to which you will not be eligible for registration.


Requirements for a certificate in ECDE

  • Minimum of CPE/KCPE plus ECDE Certificate from
    KNEC.
  • Minimum mean grade D+(plus) at KCSE and ECDE
    Certificate from KNEC.
  • Minimum mean grade D (plain) at KCSE, KNEC
    proficiency certificate, ECDE Certificate from KNEC.

Requirements for a diploma in ECDE

  • Mean grade C Plain at KCSE OR ECDE Certificate from KNEC.
  • Mean grade C+ (plus) and above for a University Diploma.

Requirements for Degree in ECDE

To enrol for a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development Education, you need a KCSE mean grade of at least C plus or a Diploma in ECDE.

Diploma in primary teacher education requirements

To be registered as a primary school teacher you need to meet the following academic and professional requirements.

  • Minimum grade C Plain in KCSE and above.
  • PTE Certificate from KNEC.
  • Mean grade of C-(minus) for visual and hearing-impaired persons.

You can enrol for the course in any Teacher’s training college (TTC).

Diploma in Education (secondary option)

  • Minimum grade C Plus in KCSE and above and C+ (plus) in the two subjects specialization
  • At least C plain in English
  • C (plain) in Mathematics for science-based courses
  • D+( plus) in Mathematics in non-science-based courses


Diploma in Education for Visually and hearing impaired

  • Minimum grade C Plain in KCSE and above.
  • At least C minus in English
  • C (minus) in Mathematics for science-based courses
  • D( plain) in Mathematics in non-science-based courses

Bachelor of Education (Science/arts)

  • Minimum mean grade C+ (plus) and above or its
  • equivalent.
  • C+ (plus) in two subjects of specialization.

Bachelor of Education Arts subjects combinations

Education arts teaching courses in Kenya (Diploma and Degree) have the following combinations.

Note that some subject combinations may not be on offer in some institutions.

Postgraduate diploma in education

To be registered as a postgraduate diploma in education holder, you need to meet the following requirements. You can read more about the course through the provided link.

  1. Be a holder of a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree. Note that TSC only accepts a limited number of courses in this category.
  2. Minimum grade C Plus in KCSE and above and C+ (plus) in the two subjects specialization.

Bachelor of arts/science with education

With this course, you will be killing two birds with one stone. This is because you will hold a degree in either science or arts in your preferred specializations and still be eligible to be registered as a teacher.

The course is also less competitive.

Bachelor of Technology Education

Among all education courses in Kenya, the Bachelor of Technology education is the only course meant to train tvet trainers. The other alternative is enrolling for a technical trainer course at the Kenya School of TVET.

However, with this course, you will not be registered with TSC but you qualify for TVETA registration a body that regulates and registers TVET institutions and trainers.
